Thankfully, more people are creating 1:48 dollhouse items and a slight more are creating modern items, so this month has some nice finds!

Jane Harrop

Jane has an ever growing collection of 60s and 70s modern kits, but this kitchen takes the cake. Depending on how you paint and finish it, this kitchen could look retro as shown or it could look ultra contemporary. Also new from her is a smashing bedroom kit.

Shapeways Sensations

Who doesn't need a jetted tub? Or how about an ultra modern soaking tub?

Fab Kitchens

These kits by Mini Etchers don't look like they are 1:48 scale. When well assembled, these would look much larger than they are in a photo!

Art Deco Cuteness

I'm so happy to finally see someone offer an Art Deco house, and it's created by the same designer who made my mountain cabin kit (originally a beach house before I got to it). Another major plus for this house is it's smaller size and budget-friendly price point. I imagine this house would be great with a wall inserted into the second floor for a bathroom and bedroom, with the bottom floor being open plan living and kitchen. Depending on the paint and finish, it might even look great as something more contemporary and less Art Deco.

And we've started 2019 with a building bang! Both my tiny houses and my real house are getting new kitchens. I'm in love with how my minis are now an experiment for ideas in the real house, letting me make design choices and changes on the fly.

A Blue Paradise in the 1:48 Scale Modern Cabin

I've always wanted a navy blue kitchen with light uppers and an apron sink, which were also ideas I was toying with for the real house. This design into the mountain cabin with custom cabinetry that I designed in Adobe Illustrator and cut on an Epilog laser cutter.

For solid, squarish objects like this, I draw my designs and then make copies to cut out on 1/8 basswood, gluing the copies together to build the depth. The only draw-back to this technique is that it requires a lot of sanding and prepping of the inevitable cracks before painting or sanding.

After sanding and wood putty, I prep any objects that I'm going to paint with primer. I usually prefer gray for most colors, but when a girl runs out, a girl's gotta make do with the red primer!

This makes me want to do a kitchen with butcher block countertops.

Prints are my favorite design trick for such tiny scales. The marble counter tops and the tiles were all photos scaled to size and coated in glossy finish.

And finally, I leave you with the progress on my real kitchen. As much as I loved the navy, it works so well in my mountain cabin because that house is bright, white and very large. Not so much with my tiny corner kitchen in my real house. So the uppers and lowers are the same gray for a brighter kitchen. Wood countertops are the next project while I mull over the idea of keeping or replacing that tile.

More adventures to come, and while you are waiting for my next blog post, be sure to check out my Instagram and Facebook accounts for regular updates of miniature projects in progress. Final touches to the cabin kitchen and creating a whole new design for the tiny Merrimack are next!

This past year has gone by so fast and I've had so many life adventures, from getting married to moving twice, to buying my own full-sized house. While I've updated the Instagram account more regularly, it really does feel like I've only blinked since my last blog post.

So it's high time for a re-introduction of what I'm working on!

Up first is that 1:48 scale modern mountain cabin that I converted from a beach house kit by JManLaserCrafts on Etsy. My custom built garage for this kit is finished and I'm moving onto the decor, kitchen and bathroom fixtures of the interior house. It's coming out as a white-washed, girly, and yet still grungy twist on a cabin. I love it.

Also on deck is the shrunken Earth N Tree Merrimack, which has been frustrating me all year. I regret not having built this one in more sturdy plywood, as the basswood is not playing well with the complicated shapes of the house, or my clumsiness when working with odd angles. I also feel like it is my ugly duckling project as what I had envisioned and what is turning out are not the same. Perhaps that is better in the long run, but we'll see.

Lastly, I still have plans to shrink the Earth N Tree Antrim to 1:48 scale as well, but of my laser cutting projects, that one takes a back seat to all the laser projects that go inside the first two houses.

Cross your fingers for me as I dive back into these little guys. If any of you are on Instagram, my handle is @micromoderndecor, and I post there far more regularly than my blog (plus, you'll get the added benefit of the stories feature!)
Frank Loyd Wright designed his entire home layouts around the fireplace, and I too feel that a great fireplace should be a centerpiece, so I wanted to enhance the original plans for the fireplace in my tiny version of the Earth and Tree Merrimack.

I drew inspiration from mid-century fireplaces as well as contemporary hipster fireplaces. As with the rest of the Merrimack, the stonework and lattice work were cut and etched on a laser cutter (below).

My intent was to create a fireplace that looked like a retro piece the homeowners had retained and refinished from the original home. The laser cutter was great for creating the circle shapes that really help the design of the lattice work stand apart. As with my mountain cabin, dry brushing helped bring extra life to the etched stonework.

These past two weekends most of my building attention has been spent on the 1:48 scale Merrimack (the mountain cabin is almost finished and I plan to have a grand reveal before long). This weekend the Merrimack got its finish work with a nice combination of natural and black cedar for the outside and pristine white for the inside.

Anyone who follows modern dollhouse blogs more than likely knows of the Earth and Tree Merrimack house, one of a few truly modern houses out there. If you're not familiar with it, you're in for a treat so check it out. It was love at first sight when I first discovered it, but I was as a broke college kid then and I couldn't fork out the $550 for the house and finishing kit.

Fast forward and now my bigger concern is the sheer size of the house and a dwindling interest in 1:12 scale homes. I greatly prefer 1:48 scale and needed some sort of shrink ray to get this lovely house to fit on my tiny shelf. That's where my full-time job skills in Adobe Illustrator come in, as well as a learning curve in laser cutting, which hasn't been easy.

Not As Easy As It Looks

Professionally, I can send a 400 page book to press on a four million dollar printing machine like it's nothing, but apparently it's the $1000 laser cutter at the local library that gives me major hiccups, go figure. It's been a little frustrating, especially since the plans I bought weren't meant for such tiny wood and required re-calculation, but the house made it into existence with only one wall being a bit too short. Now I can introduce you to a 1:48 scale Merrimack!

At 12 inches long, it is my smallest house. The floor heights are just a little over two inches and the whole house is full of 70s era contemporary cedar goodness. Like my San Francisco house, I am planning to make this house more present-day while still retaining its key 1970's elements. For funsies, I'm throwing in a little 50s and 60s elements too. If you've enjoyed the progress on the modern cabin, then keep reading for some retro contemporary fun with this build.

And a final cool bit of info? This house actually exists in real life. The owner of Earth and Tree designed it to be a replica of a house in Minnesota. I've since greatly modified the windows, but the basic structure is there.

The Dry Build Tour

I like to tape everything together to make sure it all fits. It also allows for an early tour of the rooms!

Modern Reno Inspiration

While there aren't very many modern or contemporary 1:48 scale house kits available, there are a growing number of kits in general and some lend themselves very well to a contemporary renovation. This HartsDesires Tudor in particular already looks very similar to a 90s Tudor revival--all it needs is a little contemporary twist inside.

Desert Minis

This shop continues to impress with it's detailed 1:48 offerings, but her modern items continue to grow. My favorites this month are her cube shelves and curved standing shelf, but also be sure to consider her other items for contemporary customizing (for example, the pots and vases can look very trendy if painted in golds or geometric patterns).

The first in a new series of posts that focus on 1:48 scale miniaturists around the world, this month I'm featuring Kathryn Asbahr and her exquisite quarter scale, hand-made Oregon lake house in smashing mid-century decor. A tiny replica of her friend's real house in Lincoln City, Oregon, no detail was spared in this mini as it is complete with a "working" retro fireplace and tiny mugs on the Eero Saarinen tulip table! Kathryn says that the "fireplace is made from bits of supplies from hubby's HO scale railroad."

Kathryn and her husband are miniature enablers. He began as a model railroad builder and when Kathryn retired in 2015 he encouraged her to dig out their old supplies and begin building together. Her skills took off and she even reconstructed the downtown of her youth, complete with the store her godmother used to run. Recently she completed a couple of mid-century houses for her husband's train layout. "He has always been there to help but mostly I have done it on my own," says Kathryn.

But it was the model train O scale that transitioned her to 1:48 dollhouses. Essentially the same scale, O scale kits are hallow. "When
I started to build the O scale (quarter) building, I knew that there
was not much available for the interiors on the train side," says Kathryn. "Research
led me to the dollhouse group."

Thus a tiny Oregon home was born. The little house was constructed from plastic modeling sheet for the structure with scrapbook paper and wood veneer for the interior. It features a spacious deck with a tiny welcome mat, big windows for an envious view of the lake and an open floor plan from which to enjoy those views from any point in the house. "We used to joke that if you wanted privacy you better go to the bathroom. It was the only room with a door."
I love it when the character of the house starts to reveal itself and you can start to picture who might live there. In this case, it came through in the addition of the garage, more exterior paint, and standup paddleboards, thanks to a laser cutter and Adobe Illustrator.

The Garage

It's nearly finished and all that needs to be done are corrections to the working door, then cutting that door on the laser cutter.
I really wanted the garage to look lived-in, with lots of evidence of car maintenance and projects through the years. The paddle boards will eventually be hung, some mountain bikes might be added, as well as garage essentials like a work bench and tool chest.

Standup Paddleboards

As a nod to the fact that this house used to be a beach house kit, I swapped the iconic imagery of surf boards with the mountain equivalent--paddleboards. The inhabitants of this cabin are paddleboard nuts with a collection spanning a beginners' 8 foot board (and actually a replica of my real board) to a 14 foot racing board.
From the outside, at least. From painting the roof, to the first floor interiors, to laser cutting (most of) the garage, a lot was achieved since the last post!

Interior rooms now have glistening white-washed hardwood with bright walls. Graphic contrast is the goal here to accent the open spaces and allow for changing decor styles as the years go by.
Perhaps my favorite transformation so far is the sunrise red roof which positively glows in angled light. It was created by applying a thin wash of red leaf paint, then dry brushing the leaf paint to pop the tones and create a rusted look.

I would probably be just as excited about the garage addition (the most noticeable difference about this kit bash), were it not for a frustrating 5 hours with a laser cutter. In short, instead of a full set of garage pieces, I walked away with only two walls and a lot of ruined wood. But I'm prepared with notes and know-how for next weekend.

Painting the stone was achieved first by spraying grey primer and a light coat of white spray paint. Light stones and dark stones were accented with hand painted acrylics, which really popped the details and created better realism.

There are soooo many different was to style luxury boho, but I am going to explore black and white geometric patterns with accents of kilim, gold and nature. Back to the 60s!

Perhaps my favorite of the October 1:48 scale discoveries were Jane Harrop's brand new range of quarter scale 60s and 70s furniture. All very delicately designed and very hard to tell that they are smaller than 1:12 scale!
Right now I am catching up with photos of my previous build, the San Francisco row house, and will then upload progress photos of the mountain cabin and my own laser cut furniture experiments.

And for those of you who love Pinterest, I have a few boards dedicated to interior design, and the two of particular note are the mini modern decor boards and the mountain cabin boards, which pertain the most to projects you will see on this blog, and perhaps to your own projects.
Continuing the fresh boho-theme, this etsy shop offers several kilim and southwest items that would blend very nicely with the hot colors of this year's trend. She also has quite an impressive offering of accessories, especially for the kitchen, such as a microwave and a blender.

Progress was made this weekend on the beach house to modern cabin conversion, particularly the basement and roof. A metal roof went onto the modern cabin-well, mostly! The other sheet to finish it is on it's way. This roof was created with scale model plastic "metal" sheets from the local hobby shop and will get a coat of red metal later.
Thanks to some Illustrator savvy, plans for the lower-level garage were drafted for a lasercutter, featuring fancy stonework and a barn style double garage door. I'm a little anxious about my math on these, especially the working garage door, but if I am correct in my calculations, then this will be a lovely addition to the cabin.
I knew it had been a while, but not that long. It seems like it was just a few months ago I was looking for a new job, and it felt like only a few months before that I had graduated college and put the final touches on my 1:48 San Francisco row house. In reality, it's been two years since my last build, and lots has changed.

I am very thrilled to see that, in that time span, interest has grown in quarter scale modern dollhouses and furniture (move over 1:12 mod, you're not alone anymore!). I was also quite shocked to find that my own house is top in the Google and Pinterest searches for 1:48 modern dollhouses. Lol, I thought that looked familiar!
I now have a mini modern dream house, a cute little cabin, in the works and look forward to sharing it as time goes by. Granted, I'm not sure how active I will be given my other hobbies and a LOT going on in my personal life, but I have made it my goal to share some progress on my little cabin at least once a month with a few filler articles each month as well (things like blog round-ups from other mini modern and quarter scale hobbyists, or 1:48 offerings from Etsy and the like).

Looking forward to some quarter scale mini modern adventures this year!Unknownnoreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3915275904832888218.post-79081016432361807092017-08-06T13:19:00.000-07:002017-11-05T11:00:01.264-08:00Fab Transformation Part 1: From the Beach to the Rocky MountainsUnlike my prior fab transformation articles, this project will span a series of articles as I spend the next few months building my next quarter scale dollhouse. And as you can see from the photos below, they are very similar, both with big windows, bright rooms, locally sourced materials and lovely angles. The cabins are just darker, due to darker woods, stones, cement or stains an paint.

Kit Bashing Goals

What I will be walking you through these next few months is commonly referred to in the dollhouse hobby as a kit-bash (the act of intentionally modifying a purchased kit). Kit bashing is a great way to give a twist to a house people are familiar with and to test your building skills before you dive into making a house completely from scratch.

Aside from using darker paints and stains, the key modifications of my kit bash will be the addition of a ground level (namely a garage), allowing one of the sides to open on a hing for greater access to interior rooms, adding an extra room upstairs, carving the MDF to mimic lap-siding, and adding a "metal" roof.

My global goal is to keep this project as budget-friendly as possible using around-the-house supplies or cheaper modeling supplies.

The Interior Inspiration

Clean modern and mid-century boho are my favorites to mix, and these aesthetics will be the dominate forces. But like the Victorian rowhouse, this project will reflect it's roots and fuse rustic cabin charm and industrial chic as well. Bright walls, wood floors, rustic metal, sourced wood, bright kilim fabrics and pops of color will be found in this house.
Back in 2015 when I dove back into dollhouses, it helped to just post my mini house and decor adventures alongside my mini horse projects, but since the horses have taken off, it made since to keep that page separate and give Micro Modern Decor it's own Facebook page. Long time no write! Last I left off, I shared a little of my adventures of graduating college and starting the job hunt.

Then I disappeared.

I landed that new job as a graphic designer in a marketing organization pretty quickly and the months flew by as I rolled up my sleeves and dove into all the graphics and branding projects I could desire.

Nearly seven months have gone by since I was regularly blogging, which for me has felt like a blink of an eye. But, for avid readers, I know seven months is a long time to wait for new content, so imagine my surprise to see that, not only were people still reading my blog, it had outgrown my professional design blog by a few thousand page views! You guys rock!

Thank you so much to those who have stuck with the blog. I am slowly getting back into this blog and my hobbies in general now that I've settled into work and have found a new home. For those who came across this blog more recently, stick around. All of you can now look forward to new content. It may start to trickle in at first, but it will come!

And for now, here is a peek into what's on my workbench.

I purchased 1980's plans by the Scale Cabinet Maker for a 1:48 scale Victorian row house but, rather than cut it by hand, I've decided to bring the plans into the latest decade by converting them to Illustrator files for lasercutting. And, being a graphic designer, using Illustrator lasercut files is another way to fuse my vocation with my hobbies. Stay tuned!
